Indymill CNC Machine Project
During my second year of University I built an Indymill CNC machine that was built with a limited number of tools within my flat. I’ve always wanted a CNC machine of my own that was capable of milling aluminium but with a large work area for wood-work. This combination isn’t possible with cheap off-the-shelf machines so it meant that I settled on making my own.
I decided to build the “Indymill” because of its relative simplicity, as well as configurability for whatever size machine you’d like to make. I followed the construction guide for this machine, which you can see here. The way the creator stored his electronics wasn’t a way that I had available to me so I decided to use a generic PC case with 3D printed mounts using the pre-existing motherboard mounts which were designed from scratch.
From this project my understanding was greatly expanded, and from this experience there has been many times this project has given me an ability to complete work others would struggle within. This experience consists of many positives but also many techniques I now know were not the best way to find the solution.
